Bing Wang, a fine jewelry designer living in Melbourne, Australia. Her passion for arts & crafts started in her early teens. She had an opportunity to get hands on with all sorts of makings thanks to an inspiring mentor of her best friend’s. Projects after projects she leant to knit, sew, embroidery, crochet, carve in wax & wood, and paint in watercolor… By age of 16 her portrait paintings became sought after in her close community.
“Making is a big part of my life. Not only it provides a sense of achievement but also a process of discovery. Working with metals is fascinating. But working with threads provides me a different arena to play with soft constructions. I constantly study how to apply colors to projects; how to present texture; how to improve durability; how to feel good when touch…so to discover the true beauty of pure thread art.” Another challenge she’s working towards is how to simplify making processes. There are always better ways to make. “My website is an ideal platform for me to share and learn alongside my audiences.”
The Philosophy
Unlike many prominent artists with recognizable signatures, my styles are changing over the time. I never wanted to be restricted to one particular look. This makes harder for me being recognized. However, this nature of me evolved into my unique philosophy: no matter what I make, jewelry or crochet works, besides perseverance of quality, it has to be FUN & NATURAL. It turns every long day of making into an amazing journey of life.
I want to discover ways to recreate the nature through my patterns. I dislike complications. I have a special awareness of material wastage. I want to be fun and free-spirited. Having these in mind I set off to explore.
Making a pattern realistic isn’t my only goal. Rather, flowers I chosen always present certain challenges so to push me to search for new techniques that fit for purpose. In each pattern you will acquire a few new techniques, which can be applied creatively to many projects.
As a designer my creativity is realized by one thing called “mood board”. I do better by drawing than coding. Hand sketches and hand drawn patterns are much preferred way to digest what’s in my mind. Well drawn patterns are “visually stimulating”, compared to the printed diagrams “visually intimidating”!
Another benefit of hand drawn is, it pushes me to design simpler stitches for the ease of drawing. When you are dealing with complicate drawings, the challenge is how to organise components in an easy-to-read manner. There isn’t an undo button. If I keep forgetting small details, constantly insert them into spare spaces will end up with a messy doodle. Usually my patterns are created after many revisions.
As a result, Floral Crochet patterns are designed for interactive reading experience with special focus on a simplified making process. These patterns always have minimum interruptions from other media and focus solely on crochet – no glue, no modeling clay, no dye, no paint, no wrapping tapes, minimal wires… Not only I work to promote pure art of thread but also washability and longevity.
My background in the creative industry helped me to critically rethink of my approach to teaching crochet as a genre of arts. I have created a system to transform crochet from a hobby to art objects for resale. I hope that you get inspired from reading my heart-felt passion and hand-drawn patterns.
